A Yoni Steam, also known as vaginal steam, is the ancient practice of sitting or squatting over steaming pot of water infused with herbs. It’s a powerful ally for women’s vitality in nourishing the uterus, regulating irregular cycles, reducing menstrual pain + imbalances and supporting fertility and reproductive health. It also supports spiritual and emotional cleansing and healing by reconnecting a woman with her feminine center.
It’s important to understand that Yoni Steaming is not for cleaning your vulva or vagina. Your vagina is inherently self-cleaning.
When Yoni Steaming is described as cleansing, it is referring to the way the heat and steam supports our feminine bodies in their own natural release and vibrant vitality. More on the healing power of heat below.
Yoni ~ meaning sacred place, vulva, vagina & womb.
For me, it was love at first try. I find it to be such a deeply nourishing ritual. It anchors my awareness into my feminine center and softens my body. I usually include it in my pre-menstrual phase to ease me into a slower pace for my moontime, and because I’ve found it to be a vital ingredient for pleasure-full bleeding. Afterwards I feel relaxed and at home in my feminine body + inner roots.
How Yoni Steams can help you through the sacred stages of womanhood
Heat is medicine for the feminine body. Where cold causes contraction, heat supports opening and release. The moist heat softens the womb and the tissues, increases vital blood flow and supports your womb in releasing any stagnant blood that may have built up.
For a pleasurable moontime and easing menstrual pain, imbalances and blood clots: Setting aside time for 1-3 Yoni Steam Rituals during your pre-menstrual phase are one of the best ways to prepare for your moontime / bleeding phase and nurture pelvic stagnancy and blood clots. The warming steam aids in cleansing and nourishing the uterine membrane. It’s important to know that healthy menstrual blood flows easily, in a bright red color with no clots.
For fertility: Yoni Steams are a great support in nourishing our feminine bodies into their natural state of fertility and creativity. It helps to create uterine membranes that are moist and receptive for conception to happen. If you are actively trying to conceive, you can use the Yoni Steam during your pre-ovulation phase up until ovulation, to prepare for conception. Do not steam after possible conception.
After miscarriage: During the vulnerable time following a miscarriage, a Yoni Steam Ritual may support your body in releasing and can also be a wonderful tool for connecting with your feminine center an to avoid stagnant emotions taking root in your body. You can begin to Yoni Steam once your bleeding has ceased. It is important to take the time to honor the initiation of this experience and actively support the energetic and physical release.
Postpartum: Keeping women warm is at the heart of many women’s wisdom practices across the world, including traditional postpartum practices. Using Yoni Steams after birth brings nourishing heat, supports the body to release fluids, and aids the womb in shrinking back to pre-pregnancy size. If you have had a caesarian you want to wait a little longer than vaginal birth, until you’ve healed well.
Peri-menopause and menopause: When your cycles are slowing down or changing, the Yoni Steam can stimulate circulation and support your womb to continue to release fully. On the other side of menopause, the warming steam can be revitalizing for vaginal dryness while nourishing a deep connection to your feminine center and Inner Woman in a time of initiation and transformation.
Pelvic pain, tightness or pain during intercourse: For women experiencing pelvic pain, chronic holding, or tightness the Yoni Steam helps to soothe and relax the pelvic muscles. Combine the steam with breath awareness and full diaphragmatic breathing to relax your pelvic muscles and create a loving connection with your feminine center.
After Hysterectomy or other pelvic surgeries: The heat and warmth can be a soothing therapy for scar tissue. When combined with castor oil packs and massage it helps to increase vitality after surgery. Doing a Yoni Steam may also be helpful in emotionally and energetically reconnecting with your feminine center after an invasive procedure and experience. Your feminine center always remains even if you no longer have your physical womb or ovaries.
Avoid Yoni Steams if:
- You are pregnant or think you may be pregnant!
- You are currently bleeding.
- Have an active vaginal infection or open wounds.
Use caution:
- If you have an IUD or another contraceptive device in place.
- Experience very heavy periods.
- When trying to support infertility or a specific condition where there may be particular contraindications.
- If you’ve recently given birth and/or have stitches and you are not sure how to support your body adequately when postpartum steaming.
If you have questions or need personal support book a 1:1 Yoni Steam Consultation here.
How to Yoni Steam at home
- Place your herbs into a large pot and cover them with your water. I usually use a 3 liter stainless steel pot with 2 liters of water and one handful or 12-20 grams of one of my Yoni Steam Herbal Blends. If you are using fresh herbs you will need around 2 handfuls. When working with fresh herbs I like to make a ritual of pouring my intention into the water and herbs while massaging them with my hands for few minutes. Call in the healing and nourishment your feminine body needs as you prepare your Yoni Steam pot.
- Bring your herbs + water to boil. Simmer on the stove for 10-15min. This will bring out more of the medicinal oils in the plants.
- Enjoy your steam for about 20 minutes. If you have a Yoni Steam Chair, place your pot inside your chair. You may need to let it cool off for a brief moment before you sit down. It should feel warm, but comfortable like any type of sauna. You can purchase your Yoni Steam Chair here. A Yoni Steam Chair allows you to sit ergonomically which makes is key to getting the most out of Yoni Steam Therapy. It is one of the best investments you can make for yourself. Alternatively you may have to get creative finding another position. For an example, you can place the pot on the floor and squat or kneel over it. You can support your elbows on the floor, or on pillows. Make sure you wear socks, and wrap the blankets closely around you to keep the heat stays inside.
- Rest and nurture yourself afterwards, stay warm, drink some herbal tea and move slowly. Breathe this feminine nourishment into your womb.
What herbs to use for Yoni Steaming
The rule of thumb is to use organic edible herbs, either freshly picked or dried. Some traditions offer specific herbal formulas for different conditions. Different combinations of herbs can add nourishment, tone, and circulation because the vaginal tissues are so absorbent. I offer two powerful Yoni Steam Herbal Blends if you are looking to get the most effective blend for your Yoni Steam Therapy.
I do not recommend using essential oils as they are too concentrated for this purpose.
Let your intuition guide you towards the plants you need by choosing the ones you are currently drawn to. For more inspiration on working intuitively with plants, one of my favorite books on this topic is “The Secret Teaching Of Plants” by Stephen Harrod Buhner.
Herbs to use include: rosemary, oregano, basil, comfrey, mugwort, motherwort, yarrow, raspberry leaf, calendula, lavender, fennel and basil, oregano, rose, nettle, sage, marigold, plantain leaves, damiana, lemon balm and many more.
Prayer and intention is an important part of working with plants and a deeply potent way of accessing support beyond the physical. You can’t do this wrong, just speak from your heart, plant your intentions, and ask for the healing support of the plant.
Shop Yoni Steam Herbal Blends
It’s not easy knowing which herbs to choose for your needs. I’ve taken the guessing out of it for you and formulated two effective Yoni Steam Herbal Blends that will support you to get the healing nourishment you desire from Yoni Steam Therapy.
Womb Warmer blend is a nourishing and uplifting blend of organic herbs that is warming and stimulates pelvic vitality, or as I like to say “a womb in bloom”. It contains some of my personal favorite herbs for Yoni Steaming in a balancing amount to optimally compliment each other.
Womb Warmer is a “mover” – it is an ideal blend for symptoms related to stagnancy and cyclic phases like fertility challenges and pregnancy loss. It is my go to blend for menstrual imbalances, particularly for those with menstrual imbalances like PMS, period pain, period clots, and irregular cycles.
Gentle Soother blend is a soothing and moisturizing blend of organic herbs that contains a blend of both mildly warming and cooling herbs that can be especially nourishing around birth and menopause. This mixture can also be used to make a sitz bath.
I love using the Gentle Soother blend when steaming after birth, especially early postpartum steaming. Or when steaming for dry conditions like vaginal dryness, lichen sclerosus, or inflammed conditions of the vulva.
All my herbal blends are made with specially selected and thoughtfully sourced organic European herbs that work together in a unique and complementary way. Buy here.

Changes to expect after Yoni Steaming
Various changes may follow after Yoni Steaming, from healing and physical releases to blissful relaxation. Things you might see include changes in your menstrual cycle, release of dark blood and clots, a lighter cycle and increased awareness of your feminine body. If there has been stagnancy or menstrual imbalances, you may expect there to be some significant changes or dark syrupy blood releasing with your next moon-time. For others the changes may come more slowly, or be much more subtle.
During and after your steam you might feel tired or emotional, and it’s important you take the time to rest and stay warm after your Yoni Steam.
I hope this guide has given you the info you need to get started, if you have any questions please add them in the comments below.
And please share if you feel inspired to try or you’ve had your own experience with Yoni Steaming, so we can all be inspired by each other. I can’t wait to hear from you!

Thank you so much for your lovely post!!
How often do you recommend a yoni steam?
Love
Rachel
Indigomoon
Hi Rachael, thank’s for letting me know you enjoyed it! The frequency depends on why you are Yoni Steaming. For regular moon cycle care I love to do 2-3 Yoni Steams in the days leading up to my moontime. If you are using it to heal a specific menstrual imbalance you may add more for a week up to your moontime. Other considerations apply if you are using them to conceive. Hope you enjoy your steaming!
Nyema
Hello,
I had a yoni stream yesterday for the first time m, but now have pelvic pain that is still intermittent today. Is this normal? Any suggestions on how to relieve it or do I need to have another steam? I can’t find any info on this symptom after having a steam.
Indigomoon
Hi Nyema, Yoni Steaming can increase awareness of pelvic tension or pain as you awaken somatic awareness and flood the area with circulation. At the same time it is also nourishing. Without knowing your personal story it is tricky to make individual recommendations. My initial thoughts would be to continue steaming, taking in the warmth and relaxation. But ideally, in the case of pelvic pain, I would prefer have a consultation to clarify and assess. Make sure to take some time to lie down and relax afterwards. Diaphragmatic breathing would be a good addition, both before and after. I have other recommendations for working with pelvic pain that require 1:1 work. Xo Indigomoon
Aline
Thank you so much for this useful information…. War can a woman do n use for a tighting after9 children… Thank you again…
Indigomoon
Hi Aline, my pleasure! I’m so glad it’s helpful for you. It’s not a straight forward answer, as far as what you need to do to tighten your yoni. It is very individual, because a lack of sensation, or ability to use your pelvic floor muscles can be caused by a variety of imbalances. Too much tension in our pelvis can also create an inability to use our pelvic floor muscles fully, for an example. So it is so important to be assessed personally. Womb Massage, posture, breath-work, pelvic floor-specific yoga, and internal self-massage are amazing at restoring and awakening your center. Please email me personally, if you want more specific recommendations based on your needs. My contact email is at the bottom of my website, just scroll down and press the ‘Contact’ button on the left side. Xx Indigomoon
Sybila
All women benefit regular yoni workout. It’s important to forst study how the muscles there are situated and then start faily exercise like pulling up clitoris, ‘lifting’ the yoni up in three floors, doing fast contractions and very long ones…. Stopping the peeing up to 100 times is very effective 🙂 They can be done while doing other stuff and your husband will happily notice the sifference as well as you will as better awareness and ability of pleasure. All the best <3
Indigomoon
Hi Sybila, I appreciate your desire to support a fellow woman, I do need to add here on my website that I do not agree with your advice as it can be harmful to gynecological health for some women. There’s a lot of myths out there, especially around kegels and the pelvic floor. It is NOT recommend for women to stop their pee up to 100 times a day, it can lead to further imbalances. Like I specified in my response to Aline there are important nuances to restoring the pelvis and creating that delicious connection to your feminine body that is so important for all of us. Xo Indigomoon
Sybila
Sorry that i was not being correct – my advice for strengthening pelvic muscles is not to hold pee but during peeing to stop and go – stop and go – stop and go up to 100 times. For me was great exercise and really improved my yoni muscle condition after childbirth. I will be happy to hear your opinion on this.
Tamara
Beautiful Indigomoon!
Thank you so much for this ritual. I know, it will become a rich source of recharging for me – one day 😉
I’ve tried it twice so far, with more or less success.
Here’s my story:
————-
Yoni-Steam-Rollercoaster
This one goes out to all of you beautiful women out there, whose days never seem long enough to fit family,
work and spiritual practice in there…
And I know that you can’t separate one from the other and that you are supposed to see family and job AS
the practice, but come on, let’s be honest:
It’s nice to have a few moments on the yoga mat for yourself. Just like that – no distractions.
So there I am, on my free afternoon. Yes, the little one is willing to spend the afternoon with daddy and
daddy is relaxed enough to do so.
I’m pre-menstrual and have dreamed of a nice yoni-steam for a few days already.
And as the afternoon is short, I’d like to listen to the latest womb-illumination talk whilst steaming.
You know, to get the most out of the time.
I have a juicy time preparing for the steam, choosing the herbs, massaging them, still catching some sun rays
while the mixture is boiling.
After my last steam, which I spent sitting on the toilet for lack of other ideas, beautiful pot of freshly picked late-summer-garden-herbs
under me, I felt I had to change the scenery to really feel the magic.
The loo isn’t quite the first place that comes to mind when you think of some precious nurturing quality-time..
So this time I squat down in front of the bed, candles, crystals, woolen socks and cosy blanket waiting for me.
After one minute into the steam I find myself gettin uncomfortable. So I start shifting my weight, kneeling, squatting, leaning,
changing my position every 10 seconds to find THE angle to stay in, at least for a bit.
The Womb-Illumnis do their best to take my mind of the distress, but after 15 minutes there’s no way I can ignore the
nagging feeling of unsatisfaction inside me any longer.
So I go on a search for alternatives, in the apartment and beyond: small stools, crib sides, plant trolleys, … I get super-creative, but nothing works.
And quarter an hour of intense hip-opening has given me the rest.
I feel BAAAD. Dissapointed, hurting and sad.
I make a mental note for December. “Dear Mother Christmas. I wish for a beautiful, cosy yoni steam chair. Love, Tamara”
But for now, feeling slightly beaten, but relieved at the same time, I decide to retreat to the toilet. At last.
With the pot under me, freshly steaming after adding new hot water, wrapped in a moist bathroom-towel, resting my head on a family-package of
wet wipes, I manage to find a few moments of peace – between outlining this comment – but still, ALSO a little peace.
That’s it: the last check on my to-do-list for today…
Thank you
Indigomoon
Thanks for sharing love! It’s always a wild journey when we return to our center 🙂 I hope that Yoni Steam chair finds its way to you, so you can be nourished by this practice. I’ve had one made for my Womb Massage clients, and they’re not hard to create if you are handy with tools. Xx Indigomoon
anna
Hi, I am planning to do my first steam tomorrow when all the people will clear from the house… I have been looking for an alternative to a wooden yoni stool, as those are beautiful as much as they are really expensive and usually made in the U.S. meaning about 100 dollar extra delivery charge… So I got the idea to order a folding fabric camping stool for 6 euro and cut a hole in it… Hope it will work!
Indigomoon
Hi Anna, I hope you enjoyed your first Yoni Steam. How was it? I also sell handmade wooden Yoni Steam stools as well, and they’re made in Europe. And although there are many ways to Yoni Steam, the type of stool you use does make a difference in the therapeutic effects of the steam. I hope you found a way to include this nourishing practice on a regular basis. Xo Indigomoon
Angela
Well I brought a 5 gallon bucket from home Depot and a toilet seat to go on top of bucket for comfort. Paid under ten dollars..it works well.!Hope this help
Indigomoon
That’s great! Thanks so much for sharing Angela. Xo Indigomoon

You can just put the large bowl of water inside the toilet and sit over the Toilet. A lot more comfortable
Indigomoon
Yes, some women enjoy doing their Yoni Steam inside their toilet, there’s many creative ways to explore. I also sell Yoni Steam chairs, which women have commented creates a more therapeutic steaming experience. Xo Indigomoon
Z
I have never been what I call a “woo woo woman” no offence, I just find being a woman so desperately inconvenient and have spent much of my life wanting the freedom of masculinity. I have no real desire to be spiritual about my period and can find that sentiment quite grating, although I respect it non the less.
Since I was 25, 5 years ago, my periods went into “hell and high water setting” for a while I thought I had gone crazy, the pain was so bad. After having all the test and being told I didn’t have all the usual I have begrudgingly settled for the result that come in brackets (your a woman, life sucks and your womb is trying to kill you-hold out for the menopause and the extra testosterone).
I have always been into herbs, so i got into agnus catus, which helped some, but I was not able to keep that up financially and so I was back to square one. Some periods are good, well few, most of them cost me a few days a month which I detest. I have settled into a co- bleeding relationship with a friend where we basically hibernate together every 28 days cursing our organs watching bad tv and eating a lot. That has been sweet. Although offers no pain reduction.
Recently I have been finding ovulation difficult too, mostly a lot of fatigue.
Some of my more woo woo women friends have been discussing Yoni Steams and which I have just tried for the first time.
I’m surprised at how rough I feel after the steam. To be fair to the steam, I didn’t feel great before, but now I am in bed, full on cramps, nausea, fatigue and dizzyness. I did enjoy the steam itself, it was quite relaxing, to sit on the loo whilst I continued working on my laptop.
Anyway, that is my story. If I remember I may pop back to update if it get’s easier. Thanks for posting this information, I really enjoyed the list of herbs. I also appreciate you being more woo woo than me so I have something to google- lol.
Take care,
Zx
Indigomoon
Haha Z, your woo woo comments are making me laugh! 🙂
It is quite common to experience worse symptoms after a Yoni Steam, especially when you’ve been dealing with menstrual imbalances for many years. It’s a gentle, but powerful practice. It can take a few cycles for it to help rebalance. Did you do your steam in the days leading up to your period?
It is incredibly challenging to deal with painful and difficult cycles, so I understand why you would wish them away. These symptoms, although common enough to be normal, should not be considered a given part of being a woman. They are signs of an imbalance that can also be balanced with the right support.
I’m glad the article was helpful for you. Would love to hear an update! Xx Indigomoon
Z
Well Indigomood- I’ll be dammed! I am a convert! I feel great today. I might not be woo woo be I will be steaming my Yoni regularly from now on.
After writing you yesterday, I stayed in bed and finished a series of telenovela’s and slept early. This morning I really felt wonderful! And I have had a great day.
To answer your question- yes I did the steam in the lead up to my period-I am due in a few days having ovulated last week. I will try and do one or two more beforeI bleed. I am really quite excited about the prospect of reduced pain and not loosing a few days a month!
I’ll keep you posted and glad to have made you laugh! Zx
Indigomoon
Yay! So happy to hear that Z, that’s great! Keep it up for a few cycles, even if you don’t see a change in your first period. And keep me updated, I’d love to hear how you go. Xx
Shauna
I also was feeling like this. Terrible episodes each month. I have recently been diagnosed with fibromyalgia. Have tou heard of it?
Indigomoon
Hi Shauna, yes I know of fibromyalgia. Although Yoni Steaming isn’t for fibromyalgia, it will offer you a restorative ritual that can support you on your continued healing journey. Xo Indigomoon
Caitlin
Can you tell me why I shouldn’t yoni steam if I have an IUD in? I’m done having kids and the iud is a really good option for me. But I’m very interested in yoni steaming!! Please share your advice on the subject. Many thanks! We
Indigomoon
Hi Caitlin, the general guideline of avoiding Yoni Steaming with an IUD, is mostly to be extra careful in case there is an unknown complication with the IUD (which could be anything from it being malpositioned to a more serious case of it being embedded into the uterus). Also there is worry that it could increase the small risk of the body expelling the IUD, more unlikely for women that have had their IUD for a long time. These are worse case scenario things that are important to be aware of, there are risks associated with a foreign object in your womb. Yoni Steams are generally very gentle, but can be stimulating to the womb, which is why I generally take it on a case by case basis with women I work with. I hope that helps! Xx Indigomoon
Jessica
Do u know of anyone who has an IUD and does YONI steaming? If so I love to know their experience.
Indigomoon
Hi Jessica, most women I am in contact with personally choose to take their IUD out and wait to Yoni Steam after that process, as they gain a greater understanding of why I advise the way I do. And they are often in a process of deepening their relationship with their body and cycle. I know of only very few women who have chosen to still Yoni Steam with an IUD after discussing the information with me, but some do feel comfortable with the risks and move on to Yoni Steam with an IUD. They are out there, as not everyone is as careful as I am with IUD’s. Like I wrote Yoni Steaming is generally gentle, but I know too much about IUD’s to be casual about them, especially when giving online recommendations where I’m not working personally with someone. I will discuss this more in my upcoming Yoni Steam e-course. Xo Indigomoon

Had a hysterectomy about 7 years ago, I still have my ovaries so I still suffer from PMS. Will this help me although I have no uterus or cervix. And I am also having more dryness and I never have had that problem before and I was wondering if the steam would help that and if so what herbs would you suggest to use.
Indigomoon
Hi J, Yoni Steaming may be a contributing therapy for you, but it can’t solve it on its own. The Yoni Steam can support you with nourishing your vaginal tissue with increased blood circulation and nurturing heat. Marshmallow root and red clover are good plants for vaginal dryness. I also like to add rosemary, and mugwort.
However, removing your uterus does affect the function of your ovaries, and your hormone levels, so there are likely underlying reasons that are creating PMS and vaginal dryness. Have you had your hormone levels checked to see where you are at? I definitely would still recommend Yoni Steaming for you, but to solve PMS, your body will need more support. Xx Indigomoon
J
Thanks, I will still try the steaming.
Ashlea Rawlins
Hi I tried yoni steaming and experienced cramps and lower abdominal discomfort after is this normal?
Indigomoon
Hi Ashlea, yes generally speaking it’s pretty common when you begin steaming. xo Indigomoon
Shemika
I had my cycle and about two days after it ended I steamed. A week or so later I started began another cycle. Is this normal? I went to Urgent Care and they didn’t see anything wrong.
Indigomoon
Hi Shemika, I understand your concern. What can happen sometimes is that you release old blood that has been stagnant in your womb, and may not have been released in your last/or earlier cycles. In that case you would likely notice the blood is less, and shorter than a regular cycle, and the blood will often be more brown or dark. If it was light spotting, it may also have been ovulation spotting. But there are also common imbalances that can cause what you experienced. To clarify further I would need more details about your regular cycle pattern, as well as what the blood was like. Feel free to email me. Xx Indigomoon
Nalah
I would like to try a Yoni Steam tonight. I have had a lot of trauma to my womb and would like to heal her. I have a bunch of different herbs that aren’t listed here and wanted to know if they would be safe to use? I have: Bay Leaves, Cinnamon Sticks, Cloves, Fresh Cilantro, Dried Eucalyptus, Fresh Mint, Fresh Thyme. I don’t think I have anymore oregano…Would any of these be safe to use (or mix and use)?
Indigomoon
Hi Nalah, I hope you enjoyed your Yoni Steam, it is a very nourishing ritual to include in your healing journey and general womb-loving-care. All the herbs you mentioned are fine to include in your Yoni Steam, they each bring different qualities. Thyme is a a great base herb for your steam, then you can add some of the other herbs in that you feel drawn to. Much love to your womb. Xx Indigomoon
Nalah
I thoroughly enjoyed my steam! I will make sure to do it more often. I felt so calm and relaxed afterwards. I felt a lot of release which was amazing. I cannot wait to do it again, I feel like this is the beginning of something great. Thank you so much for your article and your response! X0X0
Indigomoon
That is so good to hear Nala! Thanks for sharing your experience, I love hearing it. Wishing you many more delicious steams! Xx
Fatz
Hey i am have a problem of irregular mensurational cycle will the steam help me ?
If positive what is the herb that i should use
Xoxo
Indigomoon
Hi Fatz
Yoni steaming can be very nourishing for your cycles, but I would recommend it as a supporting therapy along with other things to bring balance to your irregular cycles.
My recommendation would be to do your Yoni Steams in your pre-ovulation phase to support relaxation and good pelvic circulation leading up to ovulation. Depending on how long you have had irregular cycles and what exactly is going, it is likely you would need a more varied support through nourishing the major areas of food / sleep / stress / nervous system etc. Do you chart your cycle (temperatures and cervical fluid) to see if you ovulate? Learning your fertility signs and charting will help you find your preovulation phase, and learn more about what is going on in your cycle. Xo Indigomoon
Kirsten
I started doing yoni steams with anything I can find that is around me and fresh (basil, lavender, rosemary are typically the most common) and also incorporate dried rose petals. I found a bucket large enough that I can line with a towel and insert the steaming herbs and then sit on it. I noticed a difference IMMEDIATELY in my menstruation flow and the reduction in cramping. I used to do them at least 3 times in the week prior to my cycle and it helped tremendously with PMS and cramping … down to zero PMS and zero cramping and good flow! Now, my husband and I are practicing for a baby and I can no longer do them every month if I think I may have conceived … it is a bummer, but will be back at it again very soon. Thank you for the detailed information on the herbs … very helpful!
Indigomoon
My pleasure! That is amazing to hear Kristen! I’m so glad you shared here, your experience will inspire other women. Blessings to your conception journey, it’s great that you’ve nourished yourself with Yoni Steams prior to trying to conceive. And Yoni Steaming will be an amazing ally once you get to your postpartum phase later on. Xx Indigomoon
Preeya
What a helpful and inspiring post! Thank you.
I want to do a yoni steam for general health purposes but I also have PCoS which has improved and my menses are somewhat regular for the past few months. Given I am sexually active and it’s a beautiful new beginning for me… I want to reduce inflammation, decrease PmS and boost overall uterine health.
What blend would you recommend? Listing the ingredients and their purposes was so helpful! Want to create my own unique blend for my body…
Indigomoon
I’m so glad to hear that Preeya. Great that your PCOS is improving, that is so encouraging. Yoni Steaming will be another great way to nourish your cyclic body on top of what you are already doing. My personal preference is always fresh, organic herbs when available, so depending what you have available I would choose those first. Some herbal suggestions for you would be: Motherwort, mugwort, rosemary, calendula, lavender and chamomille. I hope you will find a soothing healing ally in Yoni Steaming. Xo Indigomoon
Preeya
Thank you!
Wondering where I can buy good organic quality herbs like you mentioned above… any suggestions?
Indigomoon
Good question, I don’t have the perfect recommendation. Most of the time I order mine from a local health food store, and combine it with the ones I grow myself or gather. If you are in the US Mountain Rose Herbs is another option. There are also some good suppliers on Amazon. There’s also buywholefoodsonline.co.uk, but I haven’t found a company that sells the quality you get from homegrown/gathered herbs. Xo Indigomoon

Hello Indigomoon! I just heard your interview for the Summit and I absolutely loved it! I have been to Korea many time where Yoni Steaming is hífen I got their herbs which are basically wormwood and mugwort and the ladies from there also recommended tried citrus peels, my husband built me a wooden stool and I use an electric heater (like a camping one) for the pot to stay hot the whole time.
I sit on it for 40-60min and I also use a cover which is what they use in Korea.
I was wondering what you think about the time length and the cover.
I’ve been trying to conceive for almost 5 years, had 2 failed IUIs and 1 IVF. Now I have decided to follow the natural healing journey and am doing a Naturopath treatment. I had put the yoni steam aside but now your interview brought back to the top of my list!
And for my purpose, how often would you recommend?
Thank you so much for all your information and amazing energy!

Thank you for your sweet comment B! It’s a pleasure to connect with you. So good to hear that you are experienced with Yoni Steaming and have such a comfortable set up. As far as the length of time that you steam, it is longer than I usually do it, I usually go for around 20 minutes or so. But I don’t see it as a problem, as long as you are comfortable during and after your Yoni Steam. The steam should always feel like a comfortable heat. And the cover is a great way to contain the heat. With specific recommendations – it’s hard to say without knowing more what is happening your cycle/fertility, as it should be tailored to your symptoms/needs. Of course, pre-ovulation steaming is always a great support. But sometimes it is also helpful to take some time with increased Yoni Steaming with breaks at different times, and even avoiding possible conception for a period of time. What a major conception journey you are on, I’m wishing you lots of support as you continue forward and inward to where it may take you. Xo Indigomoon

First: Thank you!
I steam my Yoni regularly in my premenstrual time for nearly a year now and your inspiration is the reason I started with it <3
I keep getting questions from my friends and women in my yoga groups about it now and as I couldn't answer all of them I thought I ask my yoni-steam-guru. YOU 🙂
The first is, why not to steam WHILE menstruating.
The second one is, which herbs to use in which phases of the life. Now, you've given quite a bit of information on that already, but just to make sure: does "perimenopause" refer to the time (like 5-10 years) leading up to the last bleeding and does "menopause" refer to the time after that?
(We use different terms for it in German and menopause means only the last bleed, whereas the time afterwards is postmenopause…)
And the last one: when I steam I sometimes feel veeery open, as if my pelvic floor releases completly and my inner organs relax way down. Which sometimes leaves me feeling just not very well "contained".
I've started to include soft pelvic-floor-activations, first only after the steam and lately also during steaming.
It feels like it's comforting for my pelvic floor, but I'm also losing quite a bit of the relaxing benefits.
Do you perhaps have any suggestions?
Thank you so much for your support.

Thank you Tamaramaria! When I choose herbs for women I think of it less for specific phases of life, but more based on their symptoms. And there are general blends I use across the board, specialized herbs are not always the most important part. So, yes perimenopause refers to that whole stage (which can vary in length) leading up to the completion of bleeding and has it own personality and needs. Menopause is marked (medically at least) as 12 months with no bleeding, and in and around this phase has it’s own personality and needs as well. Then post-menopause it is the woman you’ve become and an entirely new cyclic season. For your pelvic floor – first of all trust your body telling you what you need to do. Unless there is a level of prolapse I would not recommend any activation during the Yoni Steam. There’s quite a few more layers to speak to here than I can cover here. It depends so much on what is actually happening in your pelvic floor not only in the muscles, but in the energy within your feminine center. I am working on an online Yoni Steam course so that will another resource you can share with your friends and students, as I will cover everything in much greater detail, including the why not around Yoni Steaming during bleeding. Would you recommend trying the yoni egg aka jade egg?
DeNaya
Hey, do you believe this will help clear a bartholin cyst?
Indigomoon
Hi Denaya, it is very helpful to include Yoni Steaming for your bartholin cysts, but it isn’t likely to clear it on it’s own. Castor oil packs over your lower belly are also good, as well as gentle oil massage (small circles with your fingertips) over your lower belly and the outer landscape of your yoni – while breathing deeply into your feminine center. Food and lifestyle play a key role too. Like most things it’s important to nourish it from many angles inside and out. Xo Indigomoon
Ariel
I enjoyed this post! I do have a question, how often would you recommend for trying to convince?? I’m hoping by practicing the yoni steams to reset my cycle, lessen cramps and up my chances of getting pregnant….any advice??
Indigomoon
Hi Ariel, thank you for your question and comment. If you are actively trying to conceive now, then I would recommend you to Yoni Steam 2-3 times in your preovulation phase. If there is a possibility of conception, then NO Yoni Steaming after ovulation. If you are not actively trying to conceive yet, but planning to, then it is ideal to take a period of eg. 3 months to prepare your body on all levels, and include more frequent Yoni Steaming before and after your bleeding phase. Wishing you balanced cycles, and a nourishing journey of conceiving your baby! Xo Indigomoon
Jessa
Hi there,
I have a question about Yoni steaming, because I would like to get into it. I have a long standing history of menstrual irregularities. I have been called an anomaly by my specialists. I have no “identifiable pathology” causing my imbalances, and quite frankly I’m sick of being referred to as a lab specimen rather than an all powerful spiritual being gifted this body from Mother Earth. It says on this page that it is contraindicated to do steaming while bleeding, and to do in leading up to your cycle. I do not have a regular cycle, nor do I have a real period. I have a consistent flow of brown sometimes chunky discharge (sorry for the visual) that is quite scant. Is it okay to do Yoni steaming with that type of “bleeding”? I have suffered from a multitude of things I have read steaming can help, i.e recurring bacterial and yeast infections, irregular bleeding, clots, pms, pelvic floor tightness and pain with intercourse. I am young and NEED to find relief, and if I am given one more tube of steroids to rub on my vagina I might lose it! Am I a good candidate to try Yoni steaming?
Indigomoon
Hi Jessa, wow I hear you on how frustrating it is to be treated as a lab specimen and not seen in your beautiful wholeness. I’m sorry you have to deal with all of this. You are absolutely a good candidate for Yoni Steaming, but as effective and soothing at it is – and it truly is an effective and nourishing practice – I do recommend you think of it as a complimentary practice along with other things to support the variety of things you experience. You will likely need support from multiple angles, which you are probably already doing. It is fine for you to Yoni Steam throughout the type of irregular cycle you describe, including during times of brown/chunky discarge. When you say you have no ‘identifiable pathology’ – I’m assuming you aren’t ovulating given what you describe, so is it because your specialist don’t see a reason why your hormones aren’t releasing in certain patterns? Please feel free to email me again if any questions or concerns come up as you try out Yoni Steaming, I hope it will be a soothing practice for you to implement amidst the frustration. Xo Indigomoon
Tosha
Hi Jessa,
Somewhat off of the subject, but relative to your health issues, I have a friend that was suffering from some of the very same issues but she diagnosed with hypothyroid which in turn throws off those imbalances you discribed. She started doing vegetable smoothies daily adding ‘sea moss’. You can find sea moss in herbal stores, organic shops etc. She has a webpage on Instagram – Virgin_Earth, where there are testimonies of how this one ingredient has helped people. I wish you and everyone great health in the new year and forward.
Quiana
Hello
I would like to do a Yoni cleansing but i noticed that you mentioned not to do so if you have a IUD. Please explain why it’s not good to use or any side effects.
Indigomoon
Hi Quiana, it’s not always a no to yoni steam with an IUD in my opinion, but there are reasons to be careful when there is a foreign object in your womb.
The general guideline of avoiding Yoni Steaming with an IUD, is mostly to be extra careful in case there is an unknown complication with the IUD (which could be anything from it being malpositioned to a more serious case of it being embedded into the uterus). Also there is worry that it could increase the small risk of the body expelling the IUD, more unlikely for women that have had their IUD for a long time. These are worse case scenario things that are important to be aware of, there are risks associated with a foreign object in your womb. Yoni Steams are generally very gentle and very safe, but can be stimulating to the womb. Online I feel it is safest to advise caution with IUD’s, and when I work one to one with women I take it on a more case by case basis. I hope that helps! Xo Indigomoon
Ariel
Hey! I was wondering, where do you suggest we get the herbs for yoni Steams at?? I want to make sure I get good/right herbs!!
Indigomoon
Hi Ariel, I always recommend using organic herbs, which you can get in your local health food store. I also love adding fresh or freshly dried herbs, so I grow some and forage some every year, a few plants can go a long way. This can also be done in pots without a . garden. Homegrown or foraged in a safe area is ideal, but not always possible. If you are in the US Mountain Rose Herbs is meant to be a good place for bulk organic herbs. Hope that helps. Xo Indigomoon
Shona
Hi. I have just been told about yoni steaming as part of a full holistic healing of my body. I am 52 and am in menopause but with no symptoms. I haven’t had a period for about 8 months now. What I’m curious about is that although i still enjoy sex (not that it happens very often. I’m single) but I no longer seem to get horny, for want of a better word, like i use to. I miss it. I also have problems with orgasm. I need a lot of extra stimulation, and if I don’t orgasm, the man is disappointed. Also with masturbation I don’t seem to get a fulfilling orgasm. Can yoni steaming help with this and what herbs should I use?
Indigomoon
Hi Shona, congratulations on journeying through menopause. Yoni Steaming can help with supporting circulation, and increasing warmth and sensation in your feminine center, which can pave the way for more fulfilling orgasms. Some good herbs could be mugwort, marshmallow root, rose petals, and blue malva. Along with Yoni Steams, increasing how often you self-pleasure is important to keep your feminine fire stirring and open in your body more constantly. Breast massage can be a beautiful practice for that too. In this transitional phase of your cyclic life it can be a bit like starting fresh, meaning the rivers and pathways of your womanly body are transitioning and rewiring, and you can nourish that with self-massage, and journeying deeper into your feminine center and Inner Woman discovering what it takes to open and circulate orgasmic energy. It’s like relearning what it takes to build a fire inside of your current physical, emotional, and energetic landscape, and then nourishing that in your regular life and relationship with yourself. There’s a lot more to say on that, than what can fit into this comment box, but I hope that helps. Xo Indigomoon

This article is amazing! I just stumbled across it after hearing someone say that the Yoni Steam helps with infertility. In 2015 I miscarried and in 2016 I had a tubal pregnancy. Both very emotional. The doctors can’t find any reason for either one….they said it just happens. We haven’t had an issue with getting pregnant just staying pregnant is the issue. My husband and I want to try to conceive next month. When would you recommend doing the Yoni steam and how often? Have you seen it help others with their infertility? I was going to do one at the end of the week bc that’s when my cycle ends….
Indigomoon
Hi Amber, I’m sorry to hear about your losses, it’s such an emotional and challenging experience. Yoni Steaming can be really helpful for fertility challenges, both physically in optimizing the vitality of your womb and cervical fluids, as well as a ritual for emotional support while you are preparing. If you are actively trying to get pregnant, you should only steam in the time between your last period and ovulation. It’s not recommended to Yoni Steam if there is a chance you are pregnant. Ideally Yoni Steaming is used as one part of supporting your body on many layers for conception. If you aren’t already charting your cycle with fertility awareness that would be a great thing to add too. Knowing how long your luteal phase is helpful, as you need a good luteal phase length to sustain pregnancy. Again there are many factors, but Yoni Steaming and charting are at the top of my list. Blessings to your next pregnancy. Xo Indigomoon

HiIndigomoon,
I had a complete mc at 6wks but never had heavy bleeding or passed any major clots. continued to spot dark brown and have cramps for 6wks and counting. I tried the yoni steam 15min and got a relief from the cramps. Would be trying the oregano tomorrow. Thank you for the info, hope this help the spotting and cramps to stop so my cycle could go bk to normal
Indigomoon
Hi Nik, I’m so sorry for your loss. I hope Yoni Steaming will be a supportive and nourishing ritual for you, it’s an excellent way to support your womb after a miscarriage. Castor Oil packs can be another supportive practice at this time too to help clear, warm, and revitalize the womb. It is important to seek support if cramping and bleeding continues for a long time after a completed miscarriage, keep steaming and listening to your body. Xo Indigomoon
Lisa
Hi, what herbs can I use to increase my flow? I have a short, light period that of bright red blood that doesn’t consistently flow followed by a few days of brown blood where I need to wear panty liners. I’ve done 2 steams so far and it has definitely helped with the cramps but I’m still not bleeding enough.
Kirsten
Hi Lisa – just some suggestions here, as we are each on our own UNIQUE path and you must figure out what is right for you. I am in my 40’s. My experience with my cycles is, I have a lot of cramping if I eat sugar, drink alcohol, and do not exercise during the 26 days prior to my flow … just an observation for me and for me, it is a HUGE key. I notice that cardio exercise is the best for me in increasing the blood flow to the uterus and eliminates PMS and cramping. Also, the steams will help you with a flow a little bit, I use Basil and Rosemary, but it’s not an exact science … you can search online for what herbs are supposed to accomplish which results. Also, to mention, perhaps look into taking an herbal remedy daily. I was seeing an acupuncturist who was giving blends of tinctures from the “Conceivable” line (I do NOT recommend) and one of the blends helped my uterus shed the lining … I bled heavily for 3 days and then it was completely finished after day 4. After I stopped taking the blends, I had one cycle that was scant and black… gross. There are MANY places to buy herbal blends, so again, do your research. I started drinking Red Raspberry tea (almost daily) because it helps support a strong uterus. It is one good herbal remedy. I also found a man in Tennessee that creates herbal blends from his own local herbs (learned from his father) and I am currently taking his “fertility” blend, but he also has another blend that is a female support tonic. I noticed a good flow, after I started taking his fertility remedy. All his blends are in an alcoholic base. His herbs are just “one” of many options and I recommend you do your research. His company is called “Warner Herbs” and they do not ship to California.
Indigomoon
Hi Lisa, thank you for your question. As far as Yoni Steam herbs I would recommend mugwort, rosemary, and oregano in particular. And doing several steams in the days leading up to your bleeding phase, as well as on the days where you experience brown blood. Supporting the circulation is vital for your womb to release with more ease. That said, ideally I would look at the whole cycle to gain an understanding of your hormonal pattern in your cycle and how that contributes to a short, light period. The uterine lining that you shed during you bleeding phase is created much earlier in your cycle. Charting your cycle through tracking your daily basal body temperature and cervical fluid pattern will provide that information that can guide you in where your body needs support. I hope that helps. Hey, i can’t wait to try this. im going to buy some herbs tommrorrow and try it! can i mix the herbs? and shoud i take a shower after the steam?
Indigomoon
Amazing! I hope you enjoy your first Yoni Steam. You can definitely mix the herbs, my personal preference is 3-4 herbs per blend, but you can find your own person balance and preference. You don’t have to shower after your steam, only if you want to, it can be nice to wrap yourself up in a blanket and lie down for a while to take in the nourishment. I would love to hear how you go. Sibel
Hi,
I thank you for the knowledge you share and your contribution! It helped me get even closer to my womanhood…
I read about yoni steaming on your website and translated the herb names and went to my herbalist :)) Last week I had 3 sessions of yoni steam, 3 days in a row. It was bliss! After the 3rd one it was my mens time but it hasn’t happened. It is 4 days late now. I don’t feel any pms, i usually do a little. I want to ask you, i read all the comments and couldnt find any similar question. Is it expected to have late menses after steaming?
Thank you in advance for your answer..
Indigomoon
Hi Sibel, I just saw your question now, so you’ve probably already had your menses. The short answer is no. Although you can expect some variations in your overall cycle and the fluids you release after beginning to Yoni Steam, a late period is more likely to be linked to a slightly later ovulation in this cycle. Of course for an accurate answer I would need to look at your cycle in detail in a 1:1 session. Do keep in mind to not Yoni Steam after ovulation if there is a possibility that you may be pregnant. Hi- I have two fibroids and was curious as to how long or how often should Ido a yoni steam to get them to “pass”
Indigomoon
Hi Melissa, thank you for your question. I’m curious who has suggested that Yoni Steaming will get your fibroids to “pass”? That’s not necessarily how Yoni Steaming work with fibroids, yet they are a wonderful supportive therapy. I always bring in Yoni Steaming when supporting women with fibroids, but not as a stand alone practice. How long and how often to Yoni Steam with fibroids, depends on the symptoms you experience. There are considerations to take if there is very heavy bleeding, for an example. I will go into this in more detail in my upcoming online Yoni Steam course. It’s also possible to book Skype calls as an option for personalized guidance, I’d be happy to support you further. I hope that helps. Xo Indigomoon
Lee Bolton
Hello Indigomoon,
I keep reading that if you have a short menstrual cycle you should use gentle herbs (not ‘cleansing herbs’) and only steam for a short time.
Can you say which herbs would be considered gentle herbs for clearing old blood/clots etc if not using cleansing herbs.
Many thanks
Lee
Indigomoon
Hi Lee, I would say there are more nuances to consider when looking at your menstrual cycle than simply the length of it. It’s tricky for me to reply with an answer to someone else’s advice, I have a slightly different approach to Yoni Steaming protocols and choice of herbs. I would personally look at more facets of your cycle and then choose from there. For gentle, yet stimulating herbs calendula and mugwort are a good pair. If you desire personal guidance based on your needs you can email me to schedule a 1:1 consultation. And if you want to learn more about choosing herbs for Yoni Steaming, get on my email list, as I have a online Yoni Steam course coming that will go into this. I hope that helps. Xo Indigomoon
Lateak G
Would you recommend trying the yoni egg aka jade egg?
Indigomoon
Hi Lateak, it truly depends on the woman. I don’t recommend it for everyone as a starting point. Working with a jade egg / yoni egg can be a powerful practice, but one that I think is often done too quickly without context or an inner foundation. And also without regard for for the energetics of each woman’s pelvis. I only add them after a strong foundation has been created through other practices. I’ve got a step by step process that comes before integrating it.
I believe in taking it slow, working with the nervous system as the foundation for our vitality, sensual and sexual energy to flourish from. To insert an object into our body landscape we have to know the state of the landscape, the season it’s in, what it’s been through, and how to make the landscape receive and move with this inserted object.
I’ve worked with jade eggs throughout 8+ years – it has its time and amazing place, but most of the time it’s not what I would recommend a woman to begin with given her personal+body story. Xo Indigomoon
Cailin
I experience intense pain and tightness during sex and it was suggested to me to try yoni steaming, what kind of herbs or blend do you think I should look into? Everything I’m seeing seems more geared towards menstruation and fertility but that’s not my issue. I feel like I want something to help me relax. Any advice on this will be super helpful!
Indigomoon
Hi Cailin, Yoni Steaming is definitely worth adding to your nourishing therapies for pelvic pain, a combined effort is ideal. The soothing heat and added circulation is the biggest part when steaming for pelvic pain. I prefer to recommend herbs based on a bit more information, but I would suggest marshmallow root, calendula, lavender, and orange peel. Xo Indigomoon

what herbs would you recommend to steam with for fibroid and how often?
Indigomoon
Hi Yana, thanks for your question. With fibroids there are multiple things I consider in regards to frequency and the herbs I choose for Yoni Steaming. And in some cases (depending on other symptoms) I bring in other therapies in first, before I add Yoni Steaming. You can still start with one of the blends mentioned in this post, but the truth is there are nuances to consider, so start gentle. Motherwort is one I often use. For personal recommendations tailored to your body you need to book a 1:1 Yoni Steam Consult with me, or wait for my upcoming online Yoni Steam course, which will cover this and more. Xo Indigomoon
Tracie
Thank you for this information. Are there specific herbs that are good for pelvic organ prolapse?
Indigomoon
Hi Tracie, when I make Yoni Steam blends I tend to think more about the whole blend and what plant qualities I want in there in relation to what I’m working with. In relation to prolapse I like to focus both on increasing circulation and toning. There are a lot of herbs that fall under these categories and there’s different reasons why I would choose different ones. Take a look at the Perimenopause & PMS blend I mention in the article. I will cover how to make Yoni Steam Herbal Blends in detail in my upcoming Yoni Steam Online Course. And I will probably be restocked with some of my own blends for purchase in a few months. You mentioned the castor oil pack and massage, Is there any way you can elaborate on that? I had an endometrial ablation 6 years ago, which has been a true blessing because of the heavy amount of bleeding I went through regularly. However, now I am experiencing severe cramping for about a week and a half before my period. I spot for 1 – 3 days, and am very grateful for that. I also have genital psoriasis, and would be thrilled if this could help with that.
Indigomoon
Yes, I rarely use or recommend Yoni Steaming as a stand alone practice, almost always along with Womb Massage therapy or other relevant elements specific to each woman. Castor Oil packs are another one of these therapeutic practices that can really helpful, especially when there has been any kind of invasive procedure or surgery. It’s warming, aids in the process of breaking down scar tissue and stagnation, and can be applied in a variety of ways for women’s health. It can be used to work with genital psoriasis too. I offer in-depth personal support in my Cycle Consultations (see link in menu), where I can guide you on how to work with this in an individualized way. I also plan to add a blog post dedicated to Castor oil packs, so stay tuned for that. xo Indigomoon
Lyric
I have a copper IUD. Should I avoid steaming because of this?
Indigomoon
Hi Lyric, it’s tricky because there is much to consider when it comes to IUD’s, way more than I can cover in a brief reply, and ideally I prefer only replying to this question if I know more about your history and experience with the IUD. I am personally quite cautious, compared to most, when it comes to IUD’s as they are very invasive. They are a foreign object in your womb, and any further irritation of it or the cervix can increase problems that may already be present. The main function of the Yoni Steam is to increase circulation and warmth, which for most women will be experienced very gently. However as a Copper IUD also creates a state of inflammation it can impact the results of Yoni Steaming. Many women still enjoy steaming with an IUD, I just say be cautious if you do decide to try Yoni Steaming. Start with shorter steams and pay very close attention to how your body responds to it. You’ll also want to tailor your Yoni Steaming to your needs if you experience heavy bleeding. xo Indigomoon

I find I get so relaxed when I steam. Can you do it too much. I find I want to do it sometimes every night to get a good night sleep.
Indigomoon
That’s great! It is possible to steam too much for some women, but it’s not a set amount. It depends on each woman’s body and how she responds. We always steam in conversation with the body and look for cues that guide us. If you are feeling good then it’s safe to trust your body to lead the way! xo Indigomoon

Hi
Thanks for your posts they are wonderful. If only I had found something like this earlier in my life.
I am have been doing womb steams in the past few months under the guidance of a womb massage practitioner.
I am 60 yo and stopped bleeding at 44. Never had children although had a terminated pregnancy at 22. I have had a couple of ultrasounds in 2021 and 2022 showing a thickened lining of the endometrium (11mm) rather than 4mm with an echo texture (ie not smooth). Having declined a hysteroscopy I am hoping to help my body heal itself. Could you recommend some herbs to blend that might help with this please? I have tried contacting the aforementioned practitioner but with no response.
Thank you
Indigomoon
Hi Dominique, that’s great that you have been steaming and connecting with your womb now. I’ve got two herbal blends in my shop, and the one called “Womb Warmer” would be my recommendation. It contains a more warming blend with a focus on increasing circulation, which would be my focus for this. Medically they often use progestin for this, but you could also look into bio-identical progesterone as additional support. I wish you the best on your healing journey. x Indigomoon
